"A long time ago I was a student of the Edmond Art Institute. You helped me through an extremely rough period of my life.  I am now an artist/web designer and I would like to express my deep appreciation for the art classes that you gave one troubled young man long ago.  Thank you!

CLASSICAL ATELIER SUPPLY LIST

We will spend the first 3 weeks drawing, so the supplies you will need initially are minimal.

DRAWING SUPPLIES:

French easel or other portable easel

Good quality (acid free) drawing paper (a medium to large size)
Good quality pencils - an assortment of graphite (i.e., 2B, 3B, etc)
Erasers - kneaded rubber and dustless white
Drawing board (a piece of 1/2 foam core works nicely as it is rigid, but
    lightweight and easy to transport)
Large clips to hold your pad onto your board
Charcoal and/or Conte Crayon if you like

PAINTING SUPPLIES:  We will discuss painting supplies well before the 4th week of the course so that you will have time to obtain them.

Suggested Brushes: Synthetic or sable (not hog bristle - this type of brush does not work well with the form painting method)

            #0 round

            #2 round

            #10 round

            #10 flat

            #10 filbert

            #12 flat

small palette knife (metal with a rounded point & a wooden handle)

Paint:  please purchase the best quality paint you can afford.  Student grade paints do not perform as well as professional grade.  You may purchase a limited palette to start - an asterick is next to the limited palette colors.

*White (zinc or titanium or cremnintz or flake)

            *Ivory Black

              Burnt Sienna

            *Violet

            *Ultramarine Blue

              Cobalt Blue

              Viridian

            *Cadmium Yellow Lemon

              Cadmium Yellow Medium

              Raw Sienna

*Grumbacher Red or Cadmium Red medium

             *Alizarin Crimson

(Note: any color with heavy metals such as cadmium will be more costly - but the tubes will last awhile, so don't skimp!)

Support: The surface you will paint on, i.e., canvas or board.

Oil primed linen is the preferred painting surface with this method of study. We will discuss sizes and sources before the 4th week of the course.

Odorless solvent such as mineral spirits (paint thinner) or Gamsol (best choice)

Glass jar with lid (for turp)

Paper towels

Glass palette (this palette should be no smaller than 9X12). You can buy a simple inexpensive glass frame, place a neutral colored paper (a neutral grey paper) under the glass – not white.  Wrap masking tape around the edges.

Scraper (retractable single edge razor blade tool obtained at Home Depot or Lowe's in the paint department)

Plastic trash bags - i.e. recycled walmart grocery bags, etc.

There is a store called Porch School and Art Supply in Oklahoma City where you can get all of these supplies at a considerable discount (up to 30% off retail).  They are located off the Broadway Extension at 50th & Santa Fe.  Address: 5200 North Santa Fe.  Phone:  524-3309

PASTEL DRAWING (Leslie Lienau)

PAPER

Pastel paper or board (preferably sanded – white or neutral) 9X12 or smaller & more than one!

(I like Wallis Paper or boards (Dick Blick). Porch School Supply in OKC and Triangle A & E will have sanded pastel paper.)

SOFT PASTELS

A variety of colors and shades is best – soft pastels cannot be “mixed” like wet media, so the more colors, values and shades you have the better.  Having a set of hard pastels for the "underpainting" and softer for finishing is ideal.

If you don’t already have them, buying a set or two would be a good idea.

Porch School Supply and Triangle A & E also sell "open stock" pastel sticks as well as a nice variety of sets. Online: http://www.dickblick.com is a good source.

I use:

Sennelier (very soft)
Rembrandt and Prisma Color (harder and good for underpainting)
Holbein (soft)
Unison (soft)
Mount Vision (which has to be ordered from http://www.mountvisionpastels.com or http://www.dakotapastels.com    (medium to very soft)

Drawing board – I use ½ foam core as a board.  It has a nice soft surface for my paper.

Masking tape or drawing clips

Drawing paper (or pad)

Pencils – H, HB, 2B

Eraser – white dustless

I use finger cots or gloves when I draw.  Please bring a terry cloth towel to place under your easel to collect the pastel dust.  It’s easier to clean up.
